Science and Spirituality – PHI 511

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course offers a history of the conflict between science and spiritual traditions and ways in which an interpretation between the traditions can be achieved. What caused the rift, the great divide between science and religion? Can science be done within the primacy of consciousness? Can we integrate scientific and spiritual cosmologies? Are there spiritual practices for inner growth that are scientific? This course will address these questions within the current developments of science.

LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR THIS COURSE

By the end of the fifth week:

Outcome 1:  Students will be able to describe in writing issues
relating to the connections between science and spirituality.

Outcome 2:  Students will be able to describe in writing the basic tenets
of classical physics and how quantum physics overthrows these tenets.

Outcome 3:  Students will be able to describe in writing how science
must be based on the primacy of consciousness.

Outcome 4:  Students will be able to describe in writing the key
issues involved with the sacred cosmology that science now
supports, especially the doctrine of five bodies of consciousness.

Outcome 5:  Students will be able to describe in writing
how consciousness creates biological order.

Outcome 6:  Students will be able to describe in writing
the future of evolution from a primacy-of-consciousness point of view.

Outcome 7:  Students will be able to describe in writing
the experimental data in support of the new view.

By the end of the tenth week:

Outcome 8:  Students will be able to explain the intellectual ideas
involved with the chakras and also should have experimental
familiarity with them.

Outcome 9:  Students will be able to explain spiritual techniques
such as meditation,
and articulate the rationale for such practices
toward transformation.

Outcome 10:  Students will be able to describe issues involved with
healing and with spiritual enlightenment. They should also be able
to articulate experimental familiarity with their own spiritual
ambitions and attainments.
