PHI 525 The Wisdom of the East in Popular Film - Observer
While watching a movie, have you ever asked yourself “What are the philosophical principles expressed in this film? Do they seem true, just, and valuable? How do these themes relate to my life?” In this course, we will explore important questions like these in relation to the following films: The Matrix; Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope; Dr. Strange; Transcendence; Groundhog Day; The Lion King; and The Legend of Bagger Vance. We will consider these motion pictures in light of the Vedic philosophy of ancient India, which offers profound wisdom that is highly relevant to our lives today. Students will watch films, read excerpts from Vedic texts, and participate in forum discussions.
